I would recommend two books....Deitel book and Java- A beginner's guide by Schildt

yeah the deitel books are very good. i remember using some earlier editions back in the days for c++

Here are some resources I find very useful. The Java ones I use very regularly; especially the API .Haven't done C++ in a while.

Java is open source so u can get all your help online without having to purchase books. especially sun.

read lots of code but often reading ahead of your teach is not a good thing

I read alot of codes to get a better understanding of java and also watch videos on youtube.com, reading: java for dummies

Forget about reading books. My advice is to search for a guy called bucky on Youtube.
