    Default CompTIA A+ Depot Technician Quiz #4

    A customer brings a computer to you that will not boot into the operating system. You decide to use a bootable floppy disk by inserting it and rebooting the computer. The drive light for the floppy illuminates, but then the computer tries to boot from the hard drive. You try this same boot disk in another computer and it works fine. Why can you not boot from the floppy disk on the customer's computer? Choose the best option(s) from those listed below.

    a) The customer's floppy drive is defective.
    b) Your boot disk is defective.
    c) The customer's computer is not set up to boot from a floppy drive.

    And you would be correct.

    You can configure startup order for devices in the BIOS settings. You may select the device type such as hard drive, floppy drive, and optical drive to be used for booting. You can also decide the boot order that determines what order to process the devices in. For example, you may want to try to boot from the floppy drive first, a CD or DVD drive second, and finally the hard drive. This would enable you to boot from a floppy or CD/DVD for diagnostic purposes. For normal users, you may want to set the computer to only boot from the hard drive to prevent users or others from bypassing your security by using a boot disk.

    Correct Option(s):

    c) The customer's computer is not set up to boot from a floppy drive.

    Incorrect Option(s):

    a) The customer's floppy drive is defective. - If the light is coming on during the POST check, the drive is usually functioning.
    b) Your boot disk is defective. - You tried the boot disk in another computer and it worked, so the boot disk must be functioning.
    d) You cannot boot a computer from a floppy disk. - It is possible to boot from a floppy, if the BIOS is properly configured.
