    Default CompTIA A+ Depot Technician Quiz #2

    You buy a new hard drive for your computer. You currently have one hard drive on the primary channel as well as a DVD-ROM and a CD-ROM on the secondary channel. You install the new drive on the same channel as the old hard drive. When you power up the computer it does not seem to recognize either hard drive. What could cause this? Choose the best option(s) from those listed below.

    a) The jumpers on the new hard drive are not configured properly.
    b) The ribbon cable is installed backwards in the CD-ROM drive.
    c) You forgot to plug in the power connector to the new hard drive.
    d) You cannot have both hard drives on the same channel.

    I was thinking the A and C are good options BUT i'm not too sure if without the power cable being plugged in IF it wud affect the IDE cable.
    The trouble with learning from experience
    is that the test comes first and
    the lesson afterwards

    If you forgot to check the settings, then they may both be set to Master. If you are using the two hard drives on the same cable, one should be set to Master and the other to Slave unless you are using the Cable select function. You should check the documentation for the correct jumper settings for your hard drive as they can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Using the Cable Select setting requires the use of a special cable.

    Correct Option(s):

    a) The jumpers on the new hard drive are not configured properly.

    Incorrect Option(s):

    b) The ribbon cable is installed backwards in the CD-ROM drive. - This would not result in the hard drives being unrecognizable, but it will prevent the CD-ROM from functioning.
    c) You forgot to plug in the power connector to the new hard drive. - If this were the case, you would still be able to boot from your original hard drive but not access the new hard drive.
    d) You cannot have both hard drives on the same channel. - You can have both hard drives on the same channel; however, you must have one set as Master and one as Slave.
