Default Report: 360’s DVD format falling behind? (Forza 3)

Report: 360’s DVD format falling behind?

Forza 3 shipping on two discs, questions surround Metal Gear Rising’s capacity, while MS kills off Blu-ray possibilities

Three and a half years since it launched, the Xbox 360’s modest DVD format is now struggling to keep up with demands of modern game development, and the solution may not be as simple as “put disc 2 in tray”.

Forza 3 will soon ship on two 360 discs, with one holding the core product and another hosting additional content. However, news site Joystiq reports that, because of the two-disc set-up, not all 360 owners will be able to access all the game’s content.

At the same time, questions are being placed on whether Metal Gear Rising will be able to fit on a single dual-layer DVD; Kojima once infamously stated that Sony’s Blu-ray format wasn’t big enough to fit in everything MGS4 had to offer.

Forza 3 developers Turn 10 has confirmed how the full Forza 3 experience will work. The additional content on disc two will be downloaded and stored on the Xbox 360’s hard drive. The game itself will run from the core content on disc one and, as the game is being played, data from the hard drive will be accessed to provide the additional content.

But the 360’s basic Arcade SKU, of course, doesn’t come with a hard drive; a near-certain indication that 360 Arcade owners will not be able to play the full game.

Yup they finally have to install games to hard disk...Now 360 owners will have mandatory installs for some titles finaly catching up to Ps3 owners who have been forced to do it for years...

Some of the best games on the ps3 dont have a mandatory install or any install at all... which means it can be done and will likely become the common thing to not have any, but the xbox situation is only going to get worse.

I am hearing more than 3 discs will be used for final fantasy 13 O_O

Anyway the problem is the multiple discs being used and the fact that some xbox360s dont have harddrives and these harddrives are not cheaply and easily replaced like the ps3 harddrives.

    Assasins Creed
    DMC4
    GT5
    Heavenly Sword
    MGS4
    Ratchet and Clank
    Resistance
    RR7
    UT3
    VF5

Or are those the crap games ?

The problem is much ado about nothing, cause when u was swapping DVD's for the PS2, nobody never bawl.

I actually have never swapped discs before.

Resistance had an install time? I didnt even notice it then

Most of those are multiplatform games developed to run from a dvd originally. The install can be made optional and u have to admit this is not going to get better with the 360. Still its easier to pop in ur one disc and install than to wait to be asked to pop in discs 2-3 for install and whatever other convoluted crap they can come up with ("install disc 3 and swap between discs 1-2 for core gameplay content").

The issue arises from differences in the reading techniques of DVD and Blu-ray. By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning, regardless of format (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, etc.). While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed. Combine that with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times.

Ppl are saying ms is moving to online distribution but there is no way developers will skip physical media and cut a significant portion of their customers off. MS i think keeps quoting their live subsciptions for this reason- trying to convince ppl that there is enough of a customer base for game downloads of full dvd9 and above games to work. Unfortunately ppl dont have that kind of bandwidth to waste.

MS is moving to online Distribution ?
Sony has been selling PS3 Games via the Playstation store for download from long time.
I know a couple people who have bought games via that Store, both Ps3 and PSP.

As for you, snake in the grass..I do not own a monitor connected console. Only a PSP and a DS.

I am faily certain I can hold off on either purchase till Christmas.
GOW3, Last Guardian, Castlevania, UFC, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine and a couple XBL games are all that interest me.

I am not buying a $400 PS3 or a $300 360 to play 4-5 games, not under any circumstances though....

Semi you fraud, half that list is PS3 only games....

They announced offering dvd games on live for download at e3. The games on PSN are mostly psn only games.

Half of them? Well the same reason still applies- they are going with dvd technology and havent optimized it for bluray.

SONY devs, one of which is KOJIMA who bragged about Blu-ray and that his game was only able to be stored on Blu-ray was secretly building the game for DVD??

    You argument fail...
