Don`t start a debate about the salary being offered it doesn`t look good son. Why seek to post in the gentleman`s thread about the salary if you know you are not interested? Why not keep such sentiments to yourself and apply if you are interested or proceed on your merry way if not?

My opinion is the job is a very lovely one....one can get an enormous amount of experience from it which money cannot buy an to top it off the gentleman is willing to train the successful applicant in areas that are need, tell me now do you find many employers in IT regularly doing that nowadays?

This is indeed the situation. The question is, how do we calculate what a salary should be?
    Factors to look at:
    (1) Size and operation of the company (This plays a big part of determining the other factors and alot of company starts small)
    (2) Duties for the applicant
    (3) Qualifications & experience
    (4) Job title
    (5) Market rate

Nevertheless I have received applications since my post. I'm sure there are Technicians that would like to receive a constant salary and don't have to worry if they are getting pay this month end or not. Also, getting an opportunity to start/ develop their career with some experience.

While it may give persons an opportunity, you would also have to balance it with whether it will retain the person or not and thus reflect badly on your company.

What could happen is that you get McDonald type employees, person who are just looking to stop a gap and move on, but in building a company you may be looking for persons to grow the company.

So you may get a project and find that it is abandoned midway, as your employee have just moved on, and leave you with the unhappy customer

Point taken. I have been blessed to find Technicians with the right work attitude. I'm am not just looking for a Technician to improve the income of the company, but an employee and a partner that wants to grow and be apart of the company.

Hey, can I share with you; My day time job is at a financial institution and the General Manager today started as a Research Clerk. Simply put, this man accepted the the job then and because of his attitude & ambition he educated him self and moved up the rank into the same organization. Now he is on several other boards including RJR Communication Group.

Dr. Aubyn Hill was the Guest Speaker at UCC 6th Graduation Ceremony yesterday at the Hilton and he spoke about the right attitudes, self discipline and that it is difficult to protect your reputation and that many factors can affect it, but you should not allow nothing to tarnish your character (Its a good speech to listen to).

So my friends, there are a lot of opportunities available out there and a lot of people watch them pass by instead of seizing them. On the other hand, you will find persons saying nothing naw gwan and some want more salary than what they are qualified for. My suggestion is to start some where and make good of it.

you have made some good points. Hope you find the right person for the job. I am sure that there are a lot of young people looking for opportunities who would jump at the chance.

The challenge you may face is that, the person may not feel that the work they are doing is junior ( only the salary). They may feel that they are a major part of the revenue stream of the company.

Hopefully there is a senior technician also a part of your company, so that the person can aspire to move up to that rank.

I am not saying that money should be the major motivation for most people. but the fact is, that it is !!!. we can debate whether this is good / bad or what caused it, but it does not change the current scenario.

I have known many persons who change jobs, in their farewell speech, they will talk about career growth etc, but in private, it was the other company offered more money.

The new paradigm does not embrace career employee, back in the days people would look to work at Grace, Red Stripe, Alcan, JPS C & W for decades / life and grow with the company, but the new dispensation shows that job security is a thing of the past. So one must always look to hone your craft and look out for your opportunities.

Aubyn Hill who you quoted also knows this is the new dispensation, he made his mark in the middle east, but on returning to Jamaica , he has changed several jobs, whether because the job has changed him or he sees other opportunities.

Jobs are scarce, so your inbox should be full with applicants. hopefully you will find one that meets your needs.

If you don't like the pay being offered start your own business and see much you can make, none of us have in position put-down for us. So this job may not suit you, but for someone starting out or in serious financial bend this job may help. But I am sure that they dont plan they don't keep employee long as they only do it until they can find better, so just see it as a stepping stone.
