What makes you think that you are a good performer at work? Do others think so? If so, why?

Most techies boss aren't savvy into what we do, so we usually have to pat ourselves on the back for good days work, or when a project is completed ahead of time. We set our own goals and try to achieve them.
Only we can save us.
How do you justify your value to the organization then? How do they know you are pulling your weight?

Yep 100% agree...only way my boss know what Im doing is if I mark my projects as complete. So what I do to kinda offset that and show that Im productive is take on projects myself without suggestion/initiation from anyone...which can be agood thing and a bad thing...I recently took on this project my self to audit the security the companies public drive...over 200,000 folders, over 500,000 files, got them to purchase a 1200USD program to help with the reporting though so they must be taking me seriously

You can't answer a question "how do you know" by saying "simply knowing".
Let's put it another way. If your company was having a cost cutting excercise, and they were looking at reducing the staff complement by eliminating some positions, changing the organization structure etc. How would you prove to the organization that the work you do, and you as an employee are valuable to the organization? What would make them believe that you have been a good performer? What justification would there be to keep you on in light of the job cuts?
Recognize that your perception and others perceptions are not always the same.
