    Default IP subnet question!

    You are given a network address of 172.16.0.0/16. Your manager asked you to create 13 sub networks with the capability of hosting 3456 devices on each network. The information is needed in 1 hour; you are at a location where you don’t have access to a computer or a binary calculator; only pen and paper.

    How would complete this task. List the all subnets and their subnet mask, IP address range and broadcast address.

    HTML Code:
    Let me give it a try.

    Ok, you need 13 subnets so we're going to borrow 4 bits from the available
    16 for networks which leaves us with 12 bits for Hosts.

    we know that 2^10 is 1024 => 2^12 = (2^10)*4 => 4096 (more than enough host)

    We borrowed 4 bits for the subnets so the increment will be 16

    New SM => 172.16.0.0/20

    first five network

        Subnets            Network Range             Broadcast
    172.16.16.0 => 172.16.16.1 - 172.16.31.254 => 172.16.31.255
    172.16.32.0 => 172.16.32.1 - 172.16.47.254 => 172.16.47.255
    172.16.48.0 => 172.16.48.1 - 172.16.63.254 => 172.16.63.255
    172.16.64.0 => 172.16.64.1 - 172.16.79.254 => 172.16.79.255
    172.16.80.0 => 172.16.80.1 - 172.16.95.254 => 172.16.95.255
                                    .
                                    .
                                    .
                                    .
    P.S. I'm pretty new to this stuff so correct me if I'm wrong. Just had a little time on my hand, plus I need the practice

    sry there was an error in my submission earlier which I just saw; the 4th subnet should be

    Actually, this was a real world situation, I was in the airport when I got the call to subnet the network before I got to the meeting which I was on my way to.

    @billerg
    How did you get to those subnets.
