Sprint phones are usually CDMA only if I recall. We don't have any networks here that are CDMA anymore. If the phone is not GSM compatible then it won't work here. Digicel/FLOW requires a device that uses a SIM card and CDMA phones don't have that.
Knowing the solution doesn't mean knowing the method. Yet answering correctly and regurgitation are considered "learning" and "knowledge".
Boost is CDMA from what I recall - but bear in mind that some phones are WORLD PHONES which may work on multiple networks including CDMA. I don't know if the specific device he has will work or not.

Use that link with your IMEI to find out if the phone would work on T-Mobile's network since T-Mobile is GSM.

A device like the J3 EMERGE is both GSM and CDMA based on the specs. Are Sprint Phones Compatible on T-Mobile?
Sprint uses a CDMA network, whereas T-Mobile uses GSM. Historically, that meant Sprint phones don’t play well on other wireless carriers, like AT&T and T-Mobile (with several exceptions). That’s still true for the time being—buying a phone from Sprint doesn’t mean it will be able to work on T-Mobile’s network. You might just see extended roaming capabilities if Sprint's coverage is poor in a specific area.

If his device is the 2016 J3 then it's a GSM device. How that ties into the T-Mobile/Sprint merger I don't know.

I recommend checking it with the T-Mobile website and if it shows as compatible then you should be able to unlock it and get it working out here. If it shows as incompatible then it won't work in Jamaica.
Please bear in mind that CLARO was a CDMA network and they are no longer in Jamaica.
