This is a free piece of software that does a great job of system snapshots. Painless - mostly. It does slow down the overall boot time, but small price to pay so that you can get back to a previous working image quickly.

Thoughts? Alternatives?

I normally just do a full backup, but this helps to go backwards after certain installs and such. Test it and see.

What I don't understand sometimes, before this software, if there was a problem with a sector on the harddrive, using scan disk would normally fix such issues. But does rolling back before a file got corrupted fix it? Maybe it puts a bandage on the issue. But the sector is still bad, no?

If the sector is marked as bad and reallocation is done, then rolling back will place the good file in a new area on the drive. Recommendation is to let a full chkdsk run (or other third party utility) and have the sectors marked if you thing it's bad. If you confirm with tools that it's bad, clone the bad drive before it fails totally and then use the roll back.
