Microsoft can now count on 17 manufacturers to make handsets for their Windows Phone 8.1 mobile OS. The reason why the Seattle based tech giant was able to get so many people on board is more than likely attributed to the fact that they’ve made their mobile OS free to use.
Two of the newest OEMs (in addition to the big boys Nokia, Samsung, and HTC) are Blu and K-Touch.
Blu is a Florida based company that made a name for themselves by offering bottom dollar stock Android handsets with decent specs for the price.
K-Touch is one of the largest OEMs and ODMs in China. This move could help Microsoft expand their reach in the region.
Adding more OEMs should prove to be a profitable strategy for Microsoft especially in the mid-range market. Lower spec’d Windows Phone tend to operate more smoothly than mid-range Android handsets, which may help to sway consumers towards a Microsoft device over a Google one.

New Windows Phones from BLU, Prestigio, Yezz and more announced at Computex
As you may already know, this week is Computex in Taiwan, one of the world’s largest consumer technology trade shows. On Wednesday, Microsoft held its official press conference at Computex and made a number of announcements. Surprisingly, Microsoft revealed new Windows Phone 8.1 hardware for the first time from new partners like BLU Products, InFocus, Prestigio, YEZZ, and more. Keep reading below for the details on all of the new Windows Phones we learned about today.

Pictured at the top of this post, this is the first Windows Phone from the popular Florida-based manufacturer BLU Products. Microsoft says the handset will see a release in the United States and Latin American countries soon. We have contacted BLU for more details about the handset.

Prestigio has announced two new Windows Phone 8.1 handsets: the MultiPhone 8400 DUO and MultiPhone 8500 DUO. Starting with the low-end, the MultiPhone 8400 DUO (pictured above) features a 4-inch IPS display with WVGA resolution (480×800), an undisclosed quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 0.3 MP front camera and 8 MP rear camera with auto focus.

Meanwhile, the MultiPhone 8500 DUO caters to the mid-range crowd with a 5-inch IPS display in HD resolution (720×1280), an undisclosed quad-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 2 MP front camera, and 8 MP rear camera with auto focus. Both handsets also feature Dual-SIM support (hence the ‘DUO’ branding). Presitigio’s MultiPhone 8400 DUO will go on sale this August for $115 USD, while the MultiPhone 8500 DUO will go on sale this July for $235 USD in Europe.

Named in honor of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the YEZZ Billy 4.7 (also pictured at the top of this article) lives up to its legacy by claiming the title of thinnest Windows Phone of all time. The handset measures in at a remarkable 7.2 mm and weighs only 120 g, largely in part to its aluminum alloy frame. When it comes to specs, YEZZ’s first Windows Phone features a 4.7-inch IPS LCD display with HD resolution (we’re guessing 1280×720), a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor with Adreno 302 GPU, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB internal storage, MicroSD card support (up to 128 GB), a 2 MP front camera, a 8 MP rear camera, and 3G HSPA+ support. YEZZ is also advertising a special bundle with the handset that includes three interchangeable back covers and a flip cover. No word on price, but Microsoft says the handset will go on sale this month in the United States through Amazon as well as Europe and Latin America.
More Windows Phone announcements
During their press conference, Microsoft demonstrated even more about Windows Phone. For one, the company actually showed off two new handsets from BLU (though the only one we currently know about is the 5-inch device pictured above). There was a new Windows Phone shown off on stage from Chinese manufacturer InFocus, which is one of the few announced today to support LTE. Microsoft also revealed that reputable ODMs BYD, Compal, Pegatron, Quanta and Wistron also had prototype Windows Phones on display today, which will most likely be sold to carriers and partners around the world as white-label devices. Microsoft attributed to this explosion of new support for Windows Phone largely to their partnership with Qualcomm, which provided OEMs and ODMs with the Qualcomm Reference Design platform. It also doesn’t hurt that Windows Phone now costs $0 for manufacturers. The company also teased that Cortana would soon be available to users in Europe and China.
