The easiest thing or most practical is to put the drive in another machine. Partition it in two. Put i836 folder on the data partition, format the os partition. And start the XP installation until it asks to reboot then take out the hard drive, put it back in the laptop and continue the installation and specify [data partition]:\i386 as the source.

Soap creek summed this up already

Please do not put XP on that machine at all.
Also, Windows 2000 would be iffy cause it don't work with all Hardware...that's why there is a Windows HCL. You may load 2000 and find that you can't find drivers for anything to work properly and you'll be stuck at 630x480 forever!!

Before you take HD out of laptop, ensure you have something to connect it to...like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812156102
You need an adapter which allows you to connect the 2.5" HD that laptops come with. The connectors on this type of HD is different as the laptop HD also get's it's power from the data connection (Note: some laptop HD come with a separate power section)

Anyway, if you have this then your problem is solved. Take out HD, put inside your machine. Format it FAT32. Get a copy of Win98SE. In it's simplest form, it's just 1 Folder with several cab files in it. Copy that to the HD.

Get a Win98SE boot diskette or an equivalent like http://www.madboot.com/.
Boot to Floppy. I've come across a problem already where Win98SE didn't like the RAM drive created by the Boot diskette and failed to install. To overcome this, once you boot to DOS, type "sys a: c:" then press Enter. This will copy boot information to the diskette.

Restart machine with HD as 1st boot device. It will boot to Dos. Go to the Win98 directory and run setup. This will start the Win98 installation.

A similar method can be used to install Win2000 if you wish. Just copy the i386 folder, repeat the diskette booting process and run setup.
