Are Cisco skills enough to get someone a job with these companies? Or does someone need good Windows networking skills as well as the Cisco skills?

one thing ma Cisco instructor and a bredgin from here tell me - all skills have common ground in some way. Usually when persuing a networking job here in JA - Systems Admin Experience is a Definate Plus (from what ive seen)

well i guess you have to have both:- the hardware side and software side

hardware side meaning how the data flows through the network........... this is where cisco routers and switches comes in to play

software side meaning the so called front end:- microsoft side which includes domain, domain controller, dhcp, users, groups, etc...........

i guess you have to be a jack of all trades especially out here in the gideon where is dog eat dog

    Not really.

In larger companies people specialize. A friend of my sister works in New York. He is a database administrator for a bank. That's all he does.

In smaller companies this is not possible. There is not enough database administration to keep someone busy 5 days a week. In this environment, the network admin will also be the database admin.

it's hard to specialize in Jamaica so its better to have hardware knowledge as well. Your core competency can remain but at some point you will have to interact with the desktops. In the freezones, you have to be an all rounder.

Crazeeplayer i would advise you to focus on concepts rather than a particular product or vendor. like everyone said Cisco is used almost everywhere but there are companies that stay away from them for many reasons. My company for example .we currently have about (900 cisco switches, 300 or more routers among other cisco devices) and we are total jumping ship to another unpopular vendor because i'm familiar with certain networking concepts my skills are easily transferable. Congrat on your ccna certification but don't limit yourself to just "cisco". try to learn as much as you can about other areas of IT that way you can stand out from the crowd. This is a question i always have in the back of my mind... "What make me different from the other 4000 people applying for this job?"

yea i am learning other areas of It for eg... dhcp, dns, active directory, groups , ous etc etc................ the server side/ microsoft side of networking

i guess its time to buckle down for the ccna security cert to try and "stand out" from others

but the thing is that before i start to study for the ccna security i would want to have some experience in an enviroment that uses cisco equipment and then it wud be easier for me to study for the ccna sec cert because i would by then actually have some experience in the field!!
