There are other ways to root the Captivate. Will get into that later.

Not all phones have this. Some are hidden. I had to install pro launcher on my dell streak to unhide the option.

He won't find it there, AT&T have been known to do this to a couple of there new devices including the Captivate and HTC Aria, wherein they block all methods of side loading apps to the devices. Search the Android Market from your phone and see if you can find and install the app through that.

I had this same problem with my dell streak from at&t. All I did was install launcher pro and enable it in launcher pro settings.
L-pro is in the market place.

Do you have adb installed? as you can use adb to install the apps that you need.

    If you don't

    1. Download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
    2. Extract it.
    3. After extracting it go into the folder you should see a folder named ADB open it up
    4. Copy the z4root apk file into the folder.
    5. Then hold down shift and right click on a blank section (make sure no files are highlighted) from the menu that pops up select "open command window here"
    6. In the command window type the following "adb install filename.apk". file name would be the name of the apk such as z4root.apk
7.Wait for the process to say successful, your app should now be installed on your phone.

    or

    1. Run the SuperOneClick.exe and select root device
2.After rooting select "Allow Non-Market Apps"

    or

Install a new launcher program such as ADW, Lancherpro etc from the market
