Hey, I am thinking of giving linux a run. Which recent version of linux has the most free 'windows like' applications?

None. Linux is Linux and Windows is Windows.

Let me be more accurate. Applications such as Open Office are a good replacement for Microsoft Office. Firefox is the default browser on many desktop Linux distros.

However, there are differences between Linux and Windows. If you want to install applications and do advanced stuff you will have to read up a bit.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop. I prefer using it over Windows XP.

I'd recommend using Ubuntu or OpenSUSE. I'd send you over to http://www.distrowatch.com/ to pick from what's on their list. Use the search function on their site to narrow down your results.

He didn't ask about installing Windows programs, but 'windows like' meaning similar to those found on Windows machines.

Installing the Dvd version of any Distro will give you the basic applications you'll need as well

You're one of the few who actually understood what the OP was asking. He wasn't even asking about which distro to use. He just wants to know about similar free software to those found on Windows.

I would recommend he visits a site called alternativeto.net. You can look up all the Windows programs you like there and check for their Linux alternatives.

    Hmmm...

I must have read it incorrectly. I could have sworn he was asking about which Linux to use.
