GMail Filter Virus Makes You a Spammer

Do you have a GMail account? Better go in there right now and check your Filters page (click Settings near the top right, then the Filters link). Does it look like this? (Click the image for a full-size version.)



It does? Bad news. Your account has been 0wned. Right now, before you do anything else, change the password and the secret question and do a thorough malware scan of your system. But there may well not be any malware on your system; and whether you find malware or not, it's no proof of the origins of your GMail Filter Virus.

What's a GFV you ask? some program has taken control of your GMail account and added a number of filters to turn the account into a spam proxy. When your GMail account receives e-mail sent to certain e-mail addresses, it forwards those messages on to other e-mail addresses. The point is to have your account "launder" the spam so as to hide its origins and increase the chance of it being delivered.

This happened to my coworker couple months ago. Her friends were complaining about receiving tons of spam from her, but we couldn't find any trace of such emails.

GMail Filter Virus can leak into any account. This virus can take control of your Gmail account by compromising your user credentials. If you think you are infected by this virus, you should first change your password and secret question and answer as soon as possible and then scan your system on which you open your email with an up to date antivirus. And then you can delete all the filters created by this virus.
