Nah. Not for now. BB still has deep roots in corporations and the developing world (like the Caribbean, India, etc.) where the people depend on the cheaper data rates that BIS affords.
The one thing that could allow Android to even phase RIM is if all these countries adopted cheaper data rates, so for example, BIS is what, 18-20US in JA ($1500+)...if Digicel/Lime/Claro were to introduce say a $1500 flat data rate, then more people would be inclined to get phones that used it, from wherever they could. (Android phones are pretty cheap on ebay, etc.). As it is, not many people are going to pay $3000 a month to get slow Edge or 3G on their phone.

Hm, i wont get in the unlimited data argument again.. -_-

If you tether your BB or put the sim card in a 3g modem, dont you get billed per MB?

The $1500 per month doesnt include making calls so i.m.h.o., the BB data plan isnt all that great

    You're missing the point.

You can buy a BB, get a $1500J BIS plan which allows you to surf, im, bbm, etc. You'd still have to get a voice plan or prepaid minutes.
You can buy an Android phone, get a $3000 plan which allows you to surf, im, etc. You'd still have to get a voice plan or prepaid minutes.

In a country where some people have it hard, that $3000 is a lot of money to spend on monkeying around on a phone and in addition to that, you'd have to spend money on your voice plan or minutes as well.

I'm saying that's where BB has it's advantage, especially in a country like JA. A dirt cheap data plan that allows people to get the entire BB experience beyond just making/receiving phone calls...and of course J'cans prize and adore freeness so BBM/Gtalk/WLM/Yahoo Messenger/Kid/Pingchat/Etc. makes RIM godmode because it circumvents the need to text message, as long as most other folks are on BB or smartphones.

BB data is super compressed so it's easy to get away with that cheap data plan. All the emailing, surfing, iming and bbming you do in a month probably doesn't reach 50MB. All your images are ripped out or smooshed to bits. So BB and the carriers make a perpetual killing from users. In essence BB users are paying $1500 for 10-50MB max per user of actual data use per month.

I just got my wife into Android and already she's busting 100+ MB a month. She doesn't use her phone between 9am and 6pm and once she's even close to home the G1 picks up my Wifi. That's 100+ MB just going out and around town, mostly in autosyncing and her checking websites every now and again.

The only way I believe Android can get an upper hand is in the event that low income/3rd world and developing countries cellphone carriers adopt a competitive data plan to BB's cheap BIS....and considering Android's data consumption vs. the BB, it's going to be kinda rough to do that.

BBM has cemented its self in the hears of many. personally, I hardly see people on msn or yahoo any more, most of my peeps are on bbm. I'm doing a part time degree now and 90% of the class has a blackberry, instant emails constantly has me on my cue, Not to mention the bbm groups for my degree courses. where ever we are group projects are a breez. When i am studying at home and don't understand something (No sweat) i just post it in the bbm group, chances are someone figured it out already and its answered in seconds..
