The first time I used Java.. it would have been a 2nd year UWI course, data structures I think.
We had to build some graph traversal algorithms of some sort, purty gay. I started hating java
since then also , been hating it ever since.

oops, err.. I guess I would have been 20 then.

    Yeah definately!!

I i started programming young too and been through couple languages.

c++ is cool, but i rarely use it. I helped my friend at NCU with some Structure arrays for data structires.

VB 6.0 is too simple. I still use it cuz im doing Gneral IT at glenmuir (general is programming in BASIC). Im writing a persona; phone directory for my SBA.

    Java is the coolest
    >> OOP with style! <<
    >> High Level at its best <<
good for all round use too.

Unreal Script, still programing with that cuz it cool to program UT2k4

resource hog? it depends on how u look it. For desktop apps, then probably dependng on how much memory u have. For server side its not a problem and that would explain why its so used for writing enterprise apps.

The thing why java is so popular (IMHO) is that it takes away the problem of coders trying to figure out whats tools they need to do the job and allows them to focus at the problem at hand.

    Nicely put leoandru!

Java comes stock with APIs up to ur eyeballz!
U rarely need to write implementation, u can just use java code written by the developers which(most times) gautantees optimum efficiency.

I started @ about 20 .. have been on and off since.. freelancing

Got started doing a course @ CIT Mobay .. I think it is a very solid language .. the resource problem I will work with. Overall advantage does outweight the disadvantage being platform independent and all.

Overall it was good, it is a 10 month course which covers concepts in various programmig languages such as:
    C
    C++
    Java
    Html
    Servlet/JSP
and DBase Management with regards to SQL

The syllabus may have changed to include more languages by now.

This course is geared towards concepts of programming with beginners in mind. It is a great place to get started if you are intereseted in programming and Web Development.

Only wished that I did PHP and ASP.net there rather than teaching myself.
