Default Help Needed: Music Recording & Setup

Basically a customer want to record his sermon (or entire service) onto his laptop (HP).

What software (if possible a freeware)....can be used to record such audio?

And how can one setup this....I was considering an RCA cable with the jack plugged into "LINE OUT or where one would put their ear piece.....

And the line in/Mic....using a 3.5mm cord....with it on both side...attach to wherever.

    Correct me....

Um! Windows as a recording software for the sound card. And some sound card has a specific software for recording. Don't think the person would want anything more than that. But you could always try Audacity or Free Audio Editor. I would go with FAE though. Got better recording and saving capabilities.

You can record into the mic or line in, depending on where the (amplified) sound is coming from.

Make sure that the input level does not peak or clip (i.e. it shouldn't go to red on the recording software).

You can monitor the input from the speaker/headphone out on the laptop.

    Hmmm let's see...
    1. Getting the audio sermon into the laptop.
-I will assume there's already a 'sound system' (mic, mixer and speakers) in place. In that case just connect the 'tape out' on the mixer to line-in/mic jack on the lappy using a RCA to 3.5mm male cable. I think this is what u had in mind.

-Another option is placing an audio interface between the mixer and lappy. A good one would give you more input options and cleaner recordings.

    2. Recording the sermon
    - Free options include Wavepad Sound Editor,Audacity. Others you could try :Goldwave, reaper, Sound forge

Another option might be to get a digital voice recorder. It's a little less cumbersome to carry around and it has a mic in so it can be connected directly to the church's mixer. They offer hours of recording and got PC connectivity also for dumping the audio files and editing after the sermon.

    Hope this helps.
