I am yet to see what prevents your from starting your business Ricky. You mention what you business needs to operate. I still don't see the issue you are having.

The car will not drop out of the sky and into your lap. There are many financial services out there that would assist you with this endeavor provided a few conditions.

At the moment you have nothing preventing you from starting your business.

    Anyone else?

Your age is not a deterrent. As a matter of fact, the younger you are the better. You will have more room to make any recovery if necessary.

You can't escape debt and loans. Think about JPSCo credits you light for a month hoping you will pay for it at the end of the month.

The only thing the affects you at the moment. Is that you will need and Aged guarantor and if you are serious about what you are doing then getting that will not be very difficult either.

Anyone have a TECH related business they having difficulty starting?

With the technology available today there are several preventative measures you can take to ensure SOME security. Simple web cams can be very powerful security cameras, using Thin clients enables you to tock them under a desk leaving on the monitor "exposed". Several applications are available that can track your computer if someone steal it.

Personally i would like to start up another internet cafe, had one a few years ago, and I've learnt alot from its failure.

Cant hide from thieves nowa days...having that fear will only hold you back, but then again I don't know the area you are referring to. But as Nastro said
if you are serious about what you are doing then getting that will not be very difficult either.

Like i said you cant run from them things, if you want to have that on your head every time you want to start a thing and mek it stop you because you THINK you might get rob or be extorted then your only limiting yourself.

My statistics are all out of date (especially when it come to JA crime) but what are the chances of any of that happening?

only "extortion" i fear is the tax man

I can understand your concern Fire21.

    (The Reality)

But, truth be told all companies that in Jamaica also face this challenge of crime in one for or the other and then extortion to a lesser extent.

It is the strategies that you implement as preventative measures that determine how successful you are at beating it, Noting well that you may not beat it 100% but you are doing well.

    (The Solution)

    1. Research : Seeing that you are not the first person in Jamaica or the world to face these kinda odds, then you need to find out what strategies are other persons implementing that works and may work in your situation. You have some many resources for that. You have already running businesses in that location and the internet. You should google it . It would interesting to see what new strategies are being used overseas (wink).

    2. Security Built in:Consider security a critical operational function of your business. This can be done with the use of Technology or otherwise.

    3. Involvement: Local involvement will be critical, business community, nearby locals and local authorities. Inform them of your business, let the know that your services are being extended to them and for them. Let them feel like they are apart of your business or at least your business holds a particular interested to them and their children. This will assist in the long run.

    4. Can't beat them join them?: Once you have theft locked up with the appropriate security methods, extortion might creep in still. If it still does remember step one. Also extortionists tend to protect what they value make them a part of your business, be creative. It will not be easy but it can be done , trust me. At the end of the day you may have to Kiss @$$ before you can kick it.
