Default What is stopping you from starting your own business?

For those who have thought about starting a business, but haven't yet done so, what's stopping you?

For those who have not given serious thought about starting a business, what's stopping you?

Not sure if I have ALL the skills that may be required for ventures (PC Tech, computer tutoring). Bad experience with persons cramping me when it comes to payment (maybe because most are friends). Doesn't seem to be many persons interested in my kind of services (anything software); or not enough to want to pay for it. Not sure how to REALLY promote the business (and what to focus on)...

Not enough government incentives etc for small businesses.

    Not enough capital.

Not enough resources available in government agencies etc to provide me with information needed to start the business I would want.

Fact is too often in Jamaica the small person gets squeezed its all about links and big businesses taking over.

Furthermore I believe that the best businesses are ones that are family-oriented as in families help in the day to day running.

Fact is they need to have more incentives for small business owners full stop and point blank. It makes no sense for them to be coming on tv encouraging people to start their own businesses and further offering entrepreneurial degree programmes when the average small or micro business owner or wannabe has a number of challenges.

Wanted to start a data recovery service from back in 1993 but since I was still in school and didn't have the money it didn't get started. From then me and a friend had it in mind since we were fooling around with data recovery from crashed drives and being successful in our backyard attempts. Later on in life, still no cash in hand, we found out that TREDLABS does the thing we wanted to do - so that put a damper on things.

Next I would have loved to do a service-oriented PC store, but the things in JA kinda messed up. Technology is overpriced and the government makes it hard for you to bring things in and do business, and on top of that I still don't have the money to start that kind of business.

If I had the opportunity then maybe I would go on my own, but the cash needed to start a business is kinda out of reach ATM.

Limited capital.... also, the fact that i'm a nobody, people dont know me. cant leave me job right now to go struggle. waiting a bit first. wanna start off by doing some odd jobs on weekends to build a name for myself then take it from there. also not sure of where to locate my business. i'm an auto tech by training....

i guess thats the best way to start. doing a thing on the side till u ppl start know you and then the word of mouth will be good advertisement and u can do you won thing.

Only thing you get from the government is a tax bill.

As most stated it’s usually the startup capital, but in my case I did start my own business and it failed due to a VERY bad partner...solely...and mean he was really bad. During the time my business was operating, out of the blue some lady come to us asking if we paying taxes yet, think she was an accountant or something.
Business with family is not necessarily a good thing, unless they are silent partners. Having too many “bosses” can cause a lot of confusion, stress and “office politics”.

not to mention sum bad vibes wen u get home, if u live with them
but for me, the lack of starting capital is a major issue. location is another major issue, as i want a central place dat ppl can reach

i know that their institutions that offer start up loans, but at da same time, u have to think about how u gonna pay back the money.
i love my country, but i fear my elected officials

Credit Unions are usually the best place to start looking for loans, the requirements are not that bad with them.

Apart from the capital i think u guys need to also bear in mind the period it takes for a small business to start making money.Sometimes up to 5 years depending on the type of business.

I Personally am considering the option but,for any small man in Jamaica to start a legitimate business and be successful it is almost impossible, just check on average the amount of businesses that open and close within a year in any urban community,it's just scary if u ask me.
