I gonna try and get ma bredrin to register on T.J. to give ya'll the full scoop about verizon...so that you can make a better decision if dem call ya'll for an interview....from what I am hearing though....there is currently only one I.T. position avaliable......and it was advertised in the Gleaner one Sunday.....I mean as people go there and do their interviews they are displeased.....guess its just another big company looking for cheap labour and where else to go than good old Jamaica....where jobs are hard to get...so some people settle for little or nothing....

However, being the unselfish person that I am, I felt it was necessary to share this information with you all, since I have become aware that there are some geuninely skilled programmers among this lot. If you are interested in any of the postions listed below, contact the Office of the School of Computing @ UTECH for more information, or stay tuned to this thread for more details. More details on this as I get it.

Note well that you will probably be in fierce competition against a number of UTECH students who will be well skilled in many of the disciplines listed below. Do not be daunted. If you feel that you have the experience and the skills, you will still stand a very good chance. I doubt that most of you will be skilled in all of the categories listed for each position, but that shouldn't stop you from trying anyway. Some of the requirements are not absolute. I hear that being qualified in most is good enough. On the job training will be provided.

Verizon is currently hiring people for the following job categories:

    Software Regression Testers
If you don't know what regression testing is, you might want to skip this one. Successful incumbents must be experienced in:
    - Microsoft SQL Server 2000
    - Stored Procedures
    - Transaction SQL
    - Triggers etc.
    - Informix (a bonus if you know Informix - automatic qualification!)

    Java Software Developers
    Must be familiar with:
    - The J2EE standard. If you've ever coded in Java under Linux, you're Good 2 Go!
    - Microsoft SQL Server 2000
    - JScript
    - The J2ME standard
    - Oracle 9i DBMS
    - C++ (I would imagine both console and Win32 level - .NET is a Plus!)
    - XML
    - XSLT

    Performance Engineers
You'll probably need a degree for this one as it seems to be a manegerial position. But, successful incumbents must also be familiar with:
    - Software Testing / Planning
    - Shell Scripting (Unix, Linux, BSD)
    - Crystal Reports (Visual Studio .NET)
    - Microsoft SQL Server 2000
    - CISCO systems (if you have a CCNA cert, you automatically qualify )
    - Checkpoint™

    Database Developers
You will most definitely be better off with a degree for this one (a UTECH degree will have you more prepared).
    - Oracle 9i DBM Systems
    - PL / SQL
    - IBM DB2 systems
    - Erwin
    - AutoSys and SyncSort
No disrespect or anything man but this is a load of bullcrap. there are no such positions avliable at verizon. its a callcentre. what they do is take calls in regards to rebates and bellsouth. when you buy a product in the us and there is a rebate on the product they are the ones that process these rebates. it has nothing to do with verizon wireless. people will be calling you an the phone cussing you off for not getting their rebate checks or when they are going to get their rebate checks. thats the core of their business here injamaica. i was hopeful just like you to think that i would be getting a big tech job there but no such thing.

they had a job fair at citibank which i attended. i gave all my info, i got called on my cell and did an interview on the phone. i was then asked to come in. only to my suprise they were not offering me a tech related job, when i enquired i was told that they have no vacany in the it dept, as they are a young company and their budget is rather low right now. i was then offered a job as a cust serv rep start salary 135/hr before tax. and that would be my pay even after probation is complete. when i enquired about salary review i was told none is in the forecast for another 2years. i just said ok thank you for your time and left. if u dont believe me you can apply to them and you will see for yourself. and come back and post your findings. i have no reason to lie about this. i will stick with my govt job for now. pays much better

Sci. etc. etc.). You have a very good question there, so I'll definitely pry some info and get back to you.
do you mind this is all a bunch of lies. there are no such positions avliable. if ya'll doubt me go to the citibank building in new kgn, go up to the 5th floor and see for yourself. jesus all this is really funny, because you are getting fooled into believing that all these positions are available just like i was fooled, people dont get your hopes up for nothing like i did.

I'm gonna go an check them out personally and see exactly what the company is up to here in Jamaica....and if these these I.T. positions are fact or fiction....in fact I'm gonna check with my inside source at Verizon for a better insight.....but so far everything I have heard coming out of that organisation is very disappointing.
