ok, i have modified the process.

    1. i installed the OCR software from the bundled CD.
    2. i modified the scan settings to perform OCR with output as MSWord

it comes out less perfect now, the OCR software is trying to interpret what it sees and it makes mistakes. the pages must be perfect reproductions or it is possible there will be errors.

    3. i uninstalled the OCR software and elected to save as jpg. the compression comes way down, its below 2mb on average and the reproduction is much better quality. it also opens flawlessly in adobe.

when i complete scanning the next chapter, i will report my results as far as converting and stitching.

    Final results.
    Adobe Pro is the Boss!
once the pages were scanned, the final tally was approx 55mbs, adobe converted the jpgs to pdf, combined them into 1 document and then optimization shrunk it to 1617k.

    very proper and very pleased.
    thanks guys.
