Talking (free) Linux version is the best choice

ok peeps I need to know which linux is the best one to use (free)
I look on the forum and I keep seeing suse poping up so I am wondering If I should switch from xp to linux and why and which version I should choose (free)

by the way I saw suse and I love the look of the desktop and all that it shows the processor memory etc. I think its slick

    SuSE rules.

But seriously it all depends on what you intend on doing with it.
For someone moving from XP, you will like SuSE.
I recomend you try a few Distros (LiveCDs) and see wich is right for you before you install.

Here are a few that I also like:
    • Fedora Core 3
    • Mandrake*
    • Debian*
    • Knoppix**
    • Slackware*
    • Ubuntu*
    • Gentoo

    *=Distros that have live CDs
    **=Distros that are live CDs

    Good luck

These apps are free and available on nearly all Distros.

I would recommend SUSE. You will definately like it, especially coming from Windows. However, if you have the bandwidth, take g2chris' suggestion and try some live cd distributions. SUSE has one. They run right from the CD with no installation and doesn't touch your computer. You will have read only access to your data however, so you can view your images and play your music and mess with your other data to get a feel for it.

SUse is nice to start out with. Suse 9.1 is about 4 cd's
Gentoo isn't for the weak, but has some nice tools. Fedora isn't bad either.
