    You are a computer technician for your company. One of the sales representatives uses an older Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to view important documents while out of the office. He complains that he cannot connect to his computer when he is in the office next to his. What is causing this problem? Choose the best option(s) from those listed below.

    a) His PDA uses infrared for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver.
    b) His PDA uses Bluetooth for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver.
    c) His PDA uses Wi-Fi for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver.
    d) His PDA and desktop both need to be updated with newer firmware to allow for wireless transmission over greater distances.

    No one attempted this? It's actually quite easy!

    Infrared (IR) is a legacy technology which requires that devices have an unobstructed line of sight between them. The maximum range for IR is 1 meter (~3 feet). Infrared was commonly used to connect peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and PDAs to each other and to computers. IR has been effectively replaced by newer technologies with faster transmission speeds and/or greater range such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

    Correct Option(s):

    a) His PDA uses infrared for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver.

    Incorrect Option(s):

    b) His PDA uses Bluetooth for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver. - Bluetooth uses radio frequencies in the 2.45 gigahertz (GHz) band for transmissions, does not need line of sight, and will work up to 10 meters (~30 feet) away.
    c) His PDA uses Wi-Fi for wireless transmission and needs a line of sight with the receiver. - Wi-FI uses radio frequencies in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands for transmissions, does not need line of sight, and will work up to 300 feet away.
    d) His PDA and desktop both need to be updated with newer firmware to allow for wireless transmission over greater distances. - Upgrading the firmware on his PDA and desktop will not fix his problem as the maximum range of infrared is 1 meter (~3 feet), and requires an unobstructed line of sight.
