The e63 your friend owns has US 3G bands thats why it works, no tri-band. There are 2 variants of the phone, difference being the 3G frequencies it works on. The N900 currently has only euro bands in 3G so if it gets to Jamaica(unless a telecom is testing and sweeping across the frequencies), it will do GSM and EDGE but it will not do 3G.
Yah your right but I thought the E63 he got was euro spec cause it came with the uk charger or my fren is lying. Also the 1700 MHZ band for 3G is for America which the N900 uses.

the 806-890 MHz band (now being used for cellular and other mobile services),
the 1710-1885 MHz band (largely used by the U.S. Department of Defense),
the 2500-2690 MHz band (used by commercial users for instructional TV and wireless data providers).
