    Default CompTIA A+ Remote Technician Quiz #16

    You are running Windows XP Professional on your computer. You suspect that you have file system errors on your data drive. You decide to use the Check Disk utility, from the tools tab in the Properties of My Computer, to check for and repair any errors on the hard drive. What additional step must you take to have Check Disk repair any file system errors found? Choose the best option(s) from those listed below.

    a) You must select the 'Automatically fix file system errors' check box.
    b) You must use a different utility as Check Disk does not check for file system errors; it only checks for and repairs bad sectors.
    c) You do not have to select anything; once you click the Check Now button on the tools tab, it automatically does this for you.
    d) The Check Disk utility can only check for file system errors; it cannot repair them.

    The Check Disk utility is used to check for file system errors. If it is run without the appropriate check box being selected, or without using the appropriate switch in the command line version, it will check the drive but will not try to repair any errors found. It will check for and try to repair any file system errors if you select the check box 'Automatically fix file system errors'. If you select the check box 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' the utility will check for bad sectors and try to recover readable information from those sectors.

    Correct Option(s):

    a) You must select the 'Automatically fix file system errors' check box.

    Incorrect Option(s):

    b) You must use a different utility as Check Disk does not check for file system errors; it only checks for and repairs bad sectors. - This statement is not true as Check Disk will check for any errors by default, but will only try to repair file system errors if specified. To perform repairs, the appropriate box must be checked for the graphical version, or the switch must be used for the command line version.
    c) You do not have to select anything; once you click the Check Now button on the tools tab, it automatically does this for you. - This statement is not true as you must select the appropriate check box for the graphical version, or use the appropriate switch for the command line version. If not, it only checks for errors and will not try to fix them.
    d) The Check Disk utility can only check for file system errors; it cannot repair them. - This statement is not true as Check Disk will try to repair file system errors if the appropriate box is checked for the graphical version, or if the switch is used for the command line version.
