The track pad works perfectly for me. However you may miss the 'tactile response' that you 'heard' from your old trackball so you may want to enable that 'buzzing' sound in the options panel.

Ha ha they need to just exercise a little bit more care when using their blackberries especially with dirty, greasy or sweaty figures which are the main reasons whey Trackballs gather dust. I am sure once they practice to keep their fingers free from all of the above then your looking at a trackball life of at least 6 months at minimum

This isn't as easy you make it sound. Most of the time, your hands are never usually clean enough to use the trackball (by your definition). I assume you use the phone on the road, after eating a snack or doing some amount of manual labour (without washing your hands a washing facilities aren't readily available).

Even the cheapest of trackballs gets expenive to keep replacing before the socket gets 'whored-out' (loose) after all these trackball changes. Your 6 month guarantee (minimum) is still too short in my opinion for something that make my thumbs sore after constant use.

Analyze what you want out of your blackberry:

    Need a decent cam?
    Trackpad/ Trackball Reliability
    Better Screen
    Memory?

Look at all the factors. I will not say the the 8520 is crap, cause a crappy phone would not sell so much however, IMO the trackpad is the only benefit when you compare it to the 8900.
