EC to examine iPhone for safety reasons after a couple of units explode
We recently told you about an iPhone that exploded in France, injuring a teenager when shards of glass hit him in the eye. This accident, a second one involving another iPhone in France and a problem in England with an iPod have led the European Commission to examine the safety of the iPhone. A spokeswoman for the consumer protection commissioner said that Apple was cooperating. The American tech company is proceeding as though these were isolated incidents. Besides the story that we told you about in France, an iPod Touch in England overheated and jumped into the air after it was dropped.
The EU consumer protection agency in Brussels has activated a rapid alarm system which notifies the appropriate governmental workers at the 27 member countries and asks national regulators if they have information on any other incidents. So far, there have been no other cases. The spokeswoman for the EU consumer protection commissioner says that the department takes all reported incidents seriously, but on the other hand, they do not want to panic anyone. Last year, Apple offered to replace batteries on some iPod Nano devices after the Japanese government warned that there was a fire risk.
