Suicide Watch 550w PSU Powers 2X HD4870s

Ok, first lets get this out of the way… DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

I was doing some research to find a power supply to pair with my two HD4870s, (one HIS 512, one Asus dk 1gig) and also to run custom a custom water cooling kit am planning to throw together. Was eyeing the Corsair HX850w and a few PSUs from PC Power and Cooling. In my search I coincidentally discovered two things about my current unit:

1. The corsair vx550w is actually a 650w in a 550 clothing.
2. A German review site was actually able to pull in excess of 800w from said PSU.

So I grabbed my trusty fire extinguisher and molex to 6pin pcie adapters dropped in my HIS card and let it rip. Here is the result….

old stuff lol ive been using the corsair 400w for ages now on a 850mhz 4870 1gb + a phenom 2 955 3.2ghz

and still have room to hit 3.8ghz cpu with 8gb ram 2 hard drives 2 dvd roms a tv card creative sound card and 6 120mm fans LOL and 1 200mm

Wah, well then i was planning to remove one of the cards but I think I will keep it running until I get all my water cooling stuff then I will upgrade to the HX750w which is a 900w psu in disguise and get this 7 year warranty.

So all things being equal those guy with 1000w psu is just pure overkill? Just for bragging rites?
