Default Scientists Worry Machines May Outsmart Man

A robot that can open doors and find electrical outlets to recharge itself. Computer viruses that no one can stop. Predator drones, which, though still controlled remotely by humans, come close to a machine that can kill autonomously.
Impressed and alarmed by advances in artificial intelligence, a group of computer scientists is debating whether there should be limits on research that might lead to loss of human control over computer-based systems that carry a growing share of society’s workload, from waging war to chatting with customers on the phone.

Their concern is that further advances could create profound social disruptions and even have dangerous consequences.

Must...kill John Connor lol. What a day that would be. I dont think truly self aware machines will come into being still, that would require them to actually be alive which is just impossible.

They grow an ear on the back of a mouse, They had a unmanned vehicles competition, and they a currently developing Artificial Intelligence, which Inventor Ray Kurzweil have made a big step towards with his invention. The OCR (optical character recognition)

I know about the ear on the mouse, but what does that have to do with self awareness?
Just a few things to consider:
Can a machine really think for itself, or does it merely react to its surroundings based on what we have programmed into it?
Can they make moral and ethical decisions when it is required of them and will they ever be able to do that?
Can they think about future consequences of their actions, question themselves, their motives and act accordingly?
For a machine to become self aware, it would mean that it needs to do much more than realize that it exsists, as i recall scientists have found that some animals can become aware of themselves as an independent being
It might just boil down to what you consider to be the measure of self awareness. Is it something given to us by a divine entity or just randomly created in a mixing pot of electrical impulses.

    Yea... what he said...

Its just a matter of time. If we can grow human parts or even skin in a petri dish then maybe we can graph it unto artificial limbs of amputee.
And if we accomplish that then what would stop us from creating robots and graph skin unto then to infiltrate dangerous organizations.

Of course i am thinking for myself, but of course it would be based on the experiences that i have been through.
Yes, we all need to make moral and ethical decisions, dont you?
Human beings actually do think about the consequences of their actions, im sure i dont need to give examples.
This has turned into a philosophical debate, which as most people know can never come to an end.

Or maybe your decision engine is producing an output which is deemed to be thought based on your current unenlightened state.
