Intel loves money. What dont you get?

There is no other rationale behind what they do. The processor newer, they will jack up the price even if its slower that what came before. Expect ntn less from them, they price fix all by themselves

Core i7 920: Anywhere from $200-$290 depending on where you buy from.
X58 Mobo: As cheap as $160 nowadays.
    Good 3x2GB Tri-Channel DDR3: $100
PSU: $50 for a decent one.
    GPU: Really?
Case: An excellent case like an Antec 300 goes for ~$50
Cooling: In a well ventilated case, stock is fine if you're not overclocking.
    HDD: $50 for a 500GB HDD. -_-
    DVD Burner: $20...
OS: Who the hell doesn't have 10 of those lying about by now?
I use a i3 laptop that runs World Community Grid all day.
