$199 Playstation 3, New SKU Inbound?

It's a well known fact that the Playstation 3 costs a couple of bob more than it's competitors, the Xbox 360 and the Wii. With Activision head honcho, Bobby Kotick recently scolding Sony over their price point and performance, it seems everyone but Sony themselves thinks the PS3 is over priced.

Just this week, Target stores in Australia were clearing stock of the 40 gig model PS3. Going for just $199 AUD ($160 USD), the unadvertised sale was quickly picked up by the Whirlpool forums and anarchy ensued. Within a matter of hours, the majority of PS3's were absorbed by Target staff, with stragglers left to pick up the remaining stock.



What does this mean in business terms? Is this a premature sign that Sony are planning a new PS3 model, maybe making way for the Slim. Unlikely, given the size of the Australian gaming market. Something along these lines would be thought to first be trialed in the US, where it would make an impact.

Judging from recent analyst banter, they expect the PS3 to receive a price cut late this year in time for Christmas and the holidays. Gamerz Ink will be keeping a close eye on future sales activity, so stay tuned.

a $200 Blu-ray machine that can sorta play games is not a bad deal...But the deal is fail, just clearing inventory in ONE store in the back of beyond.

And i guess neither is a refurb from manufacture 199-399$ console thats 1/2 expected to last you the year.

I hear gow 3 is aiming for 1080p at 60FPS. If they pull that off u and the rest of ur ps3haters will have to shaddup

anyone seeing a drop in prices in the us for summer? i want to buy a ps3 but my gf is obsessed with the wii...girls are so nintendo predisposed

Semi, sry to tell you this, GOW is not a heavy duty game. Just like SF IV, that game is 99% art assets. It is low poly on backgrounds, the enemies vanish when defeated so it saves on memory, it uses muted colours and lots of STONE, so they can skimp on high polys for backgrounds.

It is a marvel of art and gameplay, but is only a mediocre technical achievement.

so whats your choice going to be, get a ps3, half little exclusive games to play (most of which are single player) or you get a wii and enjoy all the crazy party games and watch the ladies work out to wii fit

and yes them clearing the store means the ps3 slim is on its way

Semi, I have played them all, and it is not a very polygon heavy game. The game uses abandoned temples, and abandoned Villages, all made of STONE. All the emphasis is on Kratos and who he is fighting at present.

Not even going to debate it further......
