Thumbs down Assassins Creed 2 Requires Internet (other Ubisoft games as well)

Ubisoft's New PC DRM Really Requires Net Access, Ends Game If Disconnected

Ubisoft wasn't kidding when it said that its new digital rights management technique mandates "an active Internet connection to play the game, for all game modes."
Advance copies of the first two games to embrace the new solution--Assassin's Creed II PC and The Settlers 7 PC--recently arrived at PC Gamer, leading to the discovery that the games automatically shut down if temporarily disconnected from the Internet.

Assassin's Creed II and The Settlers 7
In the case of Assassin's Creed II PC, a single-player game, players will lose any progress since the last checkpoint in the event that they briefly lose their connection to Ubisoft's master servers, be it because of client-side or server-side issues.

Other aspects of the new system include a lack of disc checks and installation limited, along with the ability for saved games to be stored in a server-side cloud. "Most upcoming Ubisoft PC games will make use of this system," according to the company, which has also promised to patch in offline support when or if the system shuts down.
Who is going to buy this game for PC now? Its not pirates killing PC gaming, its idiot developers who keep pulling crap like this. Within the first month You will likely see pirated version of this on torrent sites... the only ppl who will lose out and avoid the game are those who might have bought it... FAIL. They pretty much just castrated their possible sales...

They must think its crack they are selling and ppl have to buy it...

If piracy was not an issue, developers would not be implementing DRM.

Still, the way in which this is implemented is less than optimal. For a single player game, being tethered to their servers is a bit much. Worse penalizing players when their connection breaks, through no fault of their own, is excessive.

If piracy wasnt an issue? These ppl are paranoid as hell. DRM has been around forever and the current DRM is as effective as stopping piracy as the previous ones were. These new methods just have the added benefit of pissing off the people who actually buy the games.

Its just a retarded cycle where devs ignore PC gamers and focus on consoles leading to PC gamers not buying their games or leaving PC gaming altogether Check. Devs see the drop in sales and blame piracy, dump on more DRM and cut features to piss off more PC gamers leading to even lower sales. Check this: A friend preordered AVP that was just released (50$), he was all excited to play it and got it downloading on steam the first day. Ran it as soon as it was done and guess what? Disappointment. he said this is a console game not a PC game. Devs don't seem to think ppl don't notice their games have gotten a bit dunce for the consoles. Even BFBC2 I can tell is a console game (frostbite engine is made for consoles). It even shows in the games controls.

Imagine now they are removing LAN from games to "combat piracy." Its like cutting out your heart to avoid getting a heart attack. LAN is one of the things that will get ppl to buy the game as its just an intro to the full multiplayer. They must think that making their games less desirable to pirate is going to increase their sales or something. Less desirable to pirate = less desirable to buy

They fail to realize that DRM DON"T WORK... it only hurt the persons who actually bought the game. What they should be doing is implementing stuff to motivate people into buying the buy instead of pirating it. Something like DLC's thats tied to your online account and cloud backup of your saves.
