    Post XP Auto log off

ive recently hit a snag, a customer of mine her windows xp boots up as usual to the log on screen, as soon as you click on the account to log on windows will play the log on sound and then just automatically log off again...

ive tried booting into safe mode it does the same thing... my last resort is reformatting the drive, any ideas??

I have seen this before. The boot disk may have changed.

    Try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321/

Get a boot disk (try hiren's or UBD), one that can provide you with access to the command prompt. Try to run system restore from the command prompt by entering c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Hope the machine has system restore points available.

If he intends to format, then might as well exhaust various troubleshooting methods to derive a solution. This is a problem that can be fixed without formatting.

Yeah it could be the windows validation at work unless this person has a legal copy of windows

You can try repairing the MBR (Master Boot Record) or table I don't remember the specific name for it but you can do that from dos before it reaches the Windows Log On screen
