I had a very old B3 stepping Q6600 from March 2007, it hit 3.2 ghz at 1.4 volts. Great CPU for its time, but there is no comparison between it and the i7 3770k, the 3770k simply blows it away. BF3 performance is much better on 64 player servers. WoW NEVER dips in framerates, even in the most chaotic PvP battles. Same for Starcraft 2 custom survival maps where you fight like a million enemies lol. Encoding is twice as fast. It's just a much snappier CPU, uses a lot less power, and is a more modern platform. However, if you don't feel the upgrade crunch, don't do it just for upgrading's sake. Haswell is coming out next year, the next tock in Intel's release schedule, and that should bring some very interesting new features to the table.
    Main system: Core i7 3770k @ 4.4ghz, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H-WB, 16gb Corsair DDR3 1600 RAM, EVGA NVIDIA Geforce GTX 680, 2x 1tb Samsung Spinpoint F3, Kingston 64gb mSATA SSD
    Tablet: iPad 3 32gb
    Phone: Galaxy SII

I can hit 4.5 at 1.2 volts on my CPU, but I lowered it to 4.4 at 1.19 for daily use and temperature concern reasons (no AC in this room). I am still waiting to see what the realistic voltage threshold for this CPU is on other forum postings. Remember how the old LGA 1556 CPUs were burning up because people initially assumed they could take more voltage than they actually could?

However, I have been considering doing this mod. When the thermal paste reaches I will see if I can man up to do it LOL. I thought lapping was hardcore until I saw that.

Whatever you do make sure you get the Intel Tuning Plan... it may be worth the $25.... That mod is really hardcore, not sure if it will make any difference as it was tested to show that the TIM doesn't affect temperatures... so there is a conflicting responses

Boy, I consider myself a hardcore enthusiast but I would avoid that mod. So far the benefits of that mod are yet to be proven. Don't do it!

If you do still decide to, make sure to post pics. When I get some time I will post some 5ghz benchmarks for sandy -ivy comparisons.

EDIT: Haven't run at 5ghz for a while settled at 4.4Ghz close to stock voltage. Also updated bios a few times since then and added 8Gb more memory. Hopefully I will still be able to get 5ghz stable. I have a 4.8 stable profile so shouldn't be too hard.

There was a review that showed it didn't help any bit whatsoever, so doesn't make any sense to try it until there is actual confirmation is available.

Are you running 2x8GB or 4x4GB? if you are running the latter you will need more voltage to get it stable. The IMC doesn't like CPU/Memory OCing especially when running all slots populated, as it puts the IMC under added stress, so you have to bump up the voltage to help with stability.

Also what fans are you using on your Rad?

I am running 4x4Gbs unfortunately will probably just remove 2 sticks to avoid the hassle.

The fans on my rad are authentic Yateloon High Speed D12SH-12. 88CFM, 40dB @ 2200 RPMs. Purchased from Danger Den. I have modded mine to run at about 1600rpms so they are completely silent while still more than enough to provide excellent cooling and high static pressure.

Test with 2 sticks then with 4

Hmm kool, looking into some fans now, want to get the Gentle Typhoons but they are $15 and up each...

Found some comparable fans that are quiet and produce high static pressure...

How do they compare to the Yateloons? Yates are basically the poor mans GT Lol. Great performance at a decent price.

EDIT : Have you considered going push/pull config on your H100 if your case allows it wouldn't it provide better performance?

The GT is known and constantly recommended for high pressure and CFM at low low noise...

My case allows it, just that my Mobo doesnt... the 8pin power connector is at the edge of the board right under the rad so I can only fit one fan on the inside of the case, hoping that when i change my PSU i will be able to get a more flexible 8 pin connector that i can adjust to let the fan sit on top.. If i didnt have this many hard drives i could mount the cooler at the bottom of the case

    have a look at this

Wow I am impressed with the performance of these fans. Would have definitely gotten these if they were available when I got my Yates. Worse my Yates use molex connectors and are not sleeved. Nice find.
