    Default The Dark Side

The dark side of jamaican univesities, well lets see our top universities uwi/utech has astronominical failure rates compared to american universities on the order of 70% for some courses. Depending on which faculty a student attends she/he will have better odds taking their school fee to caymanas park. The first thing potential students wishing to apply should do is to inquire about the failure rate of the coures. If information is not forth comming from the university then speak to other students in the system. The failure rates are so high because:

    1) The institution fails students as that the longer they stay the more fee is collected.

    2) The university only want an educated few, because when every one is educated the value of the comodity decreases, and thats not good for business.

    3) Some lecturers have a god complex and/or so high a position in the university that they cannot be touched and hence have near 100% failure rates in their courses its a competition.

    4) Some lecturers will give grades in return for sexual favors especially homosexual favors, and readily fail those who do not comply.

Like many things in life our universities have a dark side that is not normally exposed to the public. I have decided to share information to make all students and potential students aware of these pit falls. If you think this is B.S. then investigate for your self!!!

You have mentioned two of our most prestige universities here in Jamaica in this allegation, you will have to supply detailed facts before you can post this misleading information.

I dont think you are allowed to inform the public in this manner. I would strongly urge you to provide the necessary information to back your claims, rather than telling us to find out for ourselves. If we had the info, then I guess the entire public would have been informed and legal charges would be brought against those persons involved.

However, its not right for you to bash the entire university, because of the lecturers' behaviours. If you have experience an act against you, then please submit a written claim to that University principal and also to the Ministry of Education. If there are legal charges, then the Ministry of Justice will also get involved.

There are persons all around the world that have great interest in our country and are willing to relocate to start life here. Posting negative remarks and opinions without facts, just speaks bad of us!!!

I notice that your location is in the USA, so I guess you are making direct reference to those universities in the US and other places outside of Jamaica. Again, if you have first-hand knowledge of a particular situation that occcur here in Jamaica, then use the proper channel of recourse.

Every institution has it's good features and it's flaws. I went to UWI, and I have my own share of disappointments with that institution. However, I do believe that it provides a good opportunity for many people to advance themselves.

People will have different experiences. I know people who breezed through UWI in 3 years and got 1st class honours. I know people who fought the odds with poverty, and challenges with fees and accomodations, and eventually made it succesfully. I know people who have struggled for many years there, failing courses, but not giving up, and eventually coming out, even with just a bare pass, then getting jobs and making their situation work for them.

I also know people who loafed the entire time, and wasted their parent's money, idled, partied, hunted girls (or guys) and ended up dropping out because in their view, "University too hard. The system is setting us up to fail."

People fail for different reasons. Many times, it simply means that there is a lesson they did not learn adequately, or something was wrong with their approach. Instead of copping out and blaming "the system", do something about your situation. Study harder, party less. Save your money, spend it wisely. Anywhere you go on the planet, you will eventually come upon a situation which you may not be able to deal with just off of your initial approach or perceptions. You will have to re-evaluate them, and try something different.

And sexual misconduct, corruption and arrogance are evident in all areas of society, and in all nations and institutions. In the beloved US, dem tings deh a common assault.

As has already been voiced, those who make accusations and bold statements, need to have facts to back it up. This is forum with techies and scientists. If you make claims you cannot back up, you will not be taken seriously, but will instead come off as just another trouble maker who couldn't make the cut.

    OWW harshe BCK.
The institution fails students as that the longer they stay the more fee is collected.
I don't entirely disagree with that statement but the students don't have to stay there if they don';t want to. Its there money.

Some lecturers have a god complex and/or so high a position in the university that they cannot be touched and hence have near 100% failure rates in their courses
This is true, i could call names of lecturers but won't.

My situation: When i was learning calculus this teacher behaved as if, this subject so easy everyone suppose to understand. You ask this teacher a question, wait till the end of the class fi ask your question.
By the end of the class i so fed up i just never bother. So whose fault is that? His or Mine.
Maybe mine; asking the question and slowing down the rest of the class.

Trust me, there are people with god complexes in the worklplace too. These kinds of people are in the US too. And worse, you have more racists there too, and if you are a foreign student, you can have a harder time than others, depending on where you go and who you happen to come across. So the moral of the story is, nowhere is perfect.

My take on this... why not focus on the BRIGHTER SIDE of things and how it can benefit us and others, and if problems arise...we address them.

Rumors are not good to spread and neither will they benefit anyone but cause more hurt and damage.
