    Default Writer speeds

What the hell is going on nowadays? These writers keep going up in speed without improving proformce. For example: I have used both a 48 x and a 52x and there is now major inprovment. Both burn ok, but people please be advise that improvement in timing is not a most.

Personally I never see the reason in buying a 52x burner mainly because a 32x can do a pretty decent job of making a cd in no time once its a relativley good brand and it has good features.

For example my burner a 16x Cyberdrive isnt a top-notch burner but it does the job of making a cd in 5minutes and a couple of seconds.

To tell you the truth it all depends on how you connect them and the speed cable you use and the bus speed of the Mobo. My bus speed is 333Mhz and I'm using UDMA 100 type IDE cables connected to the seconday IDE and it works fine. now my dad has a 48x Liteon Burner outside and while its fast (1 cd circa 2.5minutes) i would prefer to get a 32x or even a 40x although if you are a heavy burner of cd's and are on a time critical schedule and have the money, by all means buy a 52x burner, but be sure yu know how to connect it to get maximum speed out of it.

    Tech Info
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    1x - 150KB/s
    4x - 600kB/s
    16x - 2400KB/s (2.4MB)
    32x - 4800KB/s (4.8MB)
    48x - 7200KB/s (7.2Mb)

    7.2 x 60seconds = 432MB in one minute
    216MB in 30seconds

couple of seconds to cache files
couple of seconds to write Lead In and TOC
    then burn
couple of seconds to write Lead out
and then finalize if you selected the option.

Have you ever seen a 52x compatible CDR disc?

Good Question ther Nas, not really, on 48x but i guess they are compatible.

I got 10x CDRW's and I can burn them at 12x. Go Figure.

The ideology behind increasing the speed of CDR/RW's is ineveitable.

    (1) If company X doesn't do it, then compnay (Y) will, therefore company X may loose sales.
    (2) Average people will always think faster sounding numbers, 52X as oppsed to 12X means a better device and a better purcahse.
    (3) Approching near hard drive performance levels with CDRW,s can create multimedia applications with incredible capabilities.
    (4) Using the CDR/RW as a high performance, cheap optical drive will provide much faster backup capabilities.
    (5) Ultimately to replace the 3.5 floppy drive.

Most people only use CDR/RW's for simple tasks. But using a CDR/RW 's as a full fledged removable optical "hard drive" widens the scope. DVDR/RW's are the next in line to benifit from this. Ultimately optical technology is where most hardware specialists are looking.

I agree with you GILLION, manufacturers will strive to be one step above each other.
Have you noticed the standstill when it comes to DVD drives?
16x is the norm, so if I say I have a 16x Liteon DVD drive... it is as good as saying I have a 3 1/2 Imation floppy.

    Wow, some super floppy!!!
