Default Can't figure out settings for Ubuntu...Help!

I loaded ubuntu recently on an old computer I had and have been doing updates and surfing the net just trying to see how it works. One thing that's beating me so far is how to get the machine to connect to the net through my router. I'm not very good with networking. The machine connects when I plug straight into the modem so I know the network port is fine but need to know what setting I need to input so that it connects through the router rather than having to be shifting the cables back and forth and in effect disabling the other machines on the network.

Go To System --> Preferences --> Network Configuration and add your WIFI connection there.
