Default Dial-Up ... Yes, I did say DIAL UP!!

Anybody know best and most cost effective way to connect to net during a power outage using dial-up -- cell or land line?

I need 24 hour net access. I've considered subscribing to connection via satellite, but it's too expensive.

    hm.. depends.
Do you mean soley as a backup connection?
If your ADSL modem is on a UPS, it will work fine while the power is out..

please shed some more light on your situation...

Is it that ADSL/Cable isn't available in your area?

Can you provide more details about why you need 24hr net access?

there are quite a few options available but depending on what services you want Internet for and how much you are willing to spend will determine what is best for you

I preferred using minet to GPRS in the past but if you have a vehicle, getting an inverter is an option, that's what I do now like in the aftermath of a hurricane. Another option is using a smartphone, I now have one so I doubt i'll need to use the invertor except for really demanding applications where it's best to go with a computer.

need to download audio files up to 800MB in size from server and send emails.

will have LIME broadband unless it goes down.

Yes, this is needed in the event of power outage only.

I do have a blackberry, but I am concerned about the speed of file transfer vs. cost if using the BB would be my only option.

I don't have a UPS currently. I will invest in one.

Need 24 access because work requires that I'm connected 24/7/365 as I could get an assignment from anywhere at anytime, so I'm required to be available.

Well if you're pocket is deep enough you could try the Claro option of 3G speeds on data modem....I think the price is around 18k and you can get it at Claro New Kingston.

Here is a demo video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JoBvJDZt0I

The speed is about 7.2mbps which should be fast enough for your needs but I think you might have a data cap so check about that first before you decide to buy.
The good points are that it is portable which means you will be mobile at all times on a high speed connection.

    Post your results.
