Default Get 'one up' on IT certifications

IN THESE challenging times where job cuts and redundancies are on the rise, the mantra seems to be - 'survival of the fittest'. Simply put, if one has to survive, one needs to be fit and ahead of the pack.

    ...

The Microsoft Office instructor said that getting a certification works for both individuals and organisations.

"For individuals, getting a certification can ensure greater job retention probability, salary maintenance and eligibility to be hired or promoted," Anderson said. "For companies, having employees with relevant certifications will give them a competitive edge."

    ...

He detailed some certifications that are and likely to be in demand in 2009.

This article is biased as the persons credited with the quotes are from New Horizon Learning Center and would want persons to come to the school and do the certs there.

Even if the article was done by a training firm, the message that certifications can help you to become more marketable and validate your skills, is a sound one.

Certification is good for any IT career, but it all depends on the certs. The experiential-based certs are the ones that tend to be more attractive to employers versus the paper certs. Hopefully I haven't started a cert war

What exactly is an "experiental-based" cert? If I pass a cert exam using a book and a router simulator, am I not qualified?

and on the flip side i"ve seen people with experience and no certs get left behind...it all depends on how you present your self. Both are an asset but neither guarantee a job placement

Kila, the only way i see someone getting "left behind" that have experience and no certs is that person must be very very old and show NO interest in learning new technology or on the brink of retirement... the very few jobs i see advertising out there no don't even have the word "certification" i think that was a buzz word in IT about 8 years ago.
