In DFBHD i get a ping of 198 up

The higher the ping between the server and your box at home, the more lag.

    So what is Ping?

    Definition of "ping" from Webopedia:

"A utility to determine whether a specific IP address is accessible. It works by sending a packet to the specified address and waiting for a reply. PING is used primarily to troubleshoot Internet connections. There are many freeware and shareware Ping utilities available for personal computers.

It is often believed that "Ping" is an abbreviation for Packet Internet Groper, but Ping's author has stated that the names comes from the sound that a sonar makes."

wheelman...you can do a ping in a dos box in windows.
eg. 'ping bbc.co.uk' or 'ping 132.185.132.204'
it will show you 4 round trip times on that address.
so you can always check your ping against a game server just to check.

    According to linux manpages:
ping uses the ICMP protocol?s mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to elicit an ICMP ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway.
ECHO_REQUEST datagrams (??pings??) have an IP and ICMP header, followed by a struct timeval and then an arbitrary number of ??pad?? bytes used to fill out the packet.
According to matronyx interpretation of the above:
Command used in a shell prompt to determine packet transfer rate between two machines.
