    Default Problems with IE

After connecting to the Internet by dialling up to an ISP and then trying to go to any website, IE gives the usual message that it cannot locate the page. I've checked all the usual settings without improvement. Any ideas?

    Use a different browser. 8)

If you still for some reason feel you need IE, then try some of these.

Check to make sure that IE isn't set to go out over a proxy.

If the machine is being moved from a network environment that doesn't use DHCP to a stand-alone, then check to make sure certain things like your network settings reflect the change. eg. Make sure the "Obtain IP address automaticaly" option is selected under TCP/IP settings.

Still no luck, check your ISP, it could be a case where there DNS server is down. You know that that's the case if you can only get their website but no one elses. This happens with people like N5 a lot.

If all else fails, install Linux.

I'm actually trying to troubleshoot the problem for somebody. I'm beginning to suspect a faulty modem because I get timeouts when pinging an IP address.

Getting a timeout when you ping is no different from the error IE gives you. Try pinging an IP address instead of the domain.

Before you do that however, try communicating with the modem from with the modem properties option in control panel or type 'AT' <return> in a terminal client like Hyperterminal or Bitcom.

    Other probable tests/solutions:

    1) Use a friend's account with a new ISP.

    2) Re-install winsock, you can get thw winsock 2 install file somewhere on microsoft's site. http://www.microsoft.com or try a google search.

    3) Try your modem in another machine or another modem in your machine.

I've already tried both another ISP and a known working modem in the problem PC. No change. I'll now look at the winsock angle and see.

seems a bit extreme, however that's what you get for using infeiror OS's. I can get you a burn of linux fresh off an FTP site.
