I am desirous of pursuing a doctorate in I.S. Does anyone here have a doctorate, actively seeking out one or somehow came across some information that could make my search more fruitful.
Factors that will impact my decision include:
- My area of interest: IT adoption/ digital divide/ software quality
- Funding: I need to get a scholarship and/ or some form of grant etc.
- Employment opportunities: I want to be able to work on campus while doing degree, either as assistant lecturer, researcher etc
- Location: US, UK preferred but anywhere that will satisfy the other criteria listed here.
- University's reputation: I need somewhere fairly reputable that will make the degree "have weight", particularly in Jamaica. Preferrably a school strong in IS and/ or management.

Heroes to Mentors -
UWI recently launched a PhD programme in Information Systems. You could investigate that option too.
Man your best bet is to go overseas, as the caribbean is just getting into this area at the advanced level an you do not want to be a pioneer do ya. Try, one of the technical institutes in Europe or Canada
agreed the caribbean is just getting into this area but at the same time unless you can afford to go overseas (if you're not getting a scholarship) the caribbean is not such a bad alternative.
The University of the West Indies has been carrying out research and facilitating Ph D studies/research for a long time now in many different fields and now they're getting into Information Systems. Being a UWI computer science student I've checked it out and it seems good to go to me. I'm thinking about doing it in a few years If i'm still in JA. the cost at present is $250,000.
so before we cross out the caribbean remember every University has standards that have to be met especially when it comes to research and turning out Ph D's.
