I have been having problems configuring my laptop to accept dialup connections but the option is grayed out in the how do you want to connect to the internet section of the wizard.

and I have no Idea why I cant enable that.

I have to access the internet through my PC's connection using a crossover net cable.

I think it could be because your system is set to connect to the internet via a network. This could have been done when you were setting up your network. Try reconfiguring your network connection and where it asks if it connects to the net on its own or through the network, choose the first option.

I followed your advice blindz and was checking the network settings and you were right I had the option selected to connect through another computers internet connection. I changed that to the option "the computer connects directly to the internet" - still dont work - the dialup options are still grayed out - I think ah missing something.

I was fooling around and found that I could add a dialup connection from the control panels internet options

I got an error when I was trying to add a connection

The Remote Access Service Manager could not start

I dont know what this is, I checked the services and found it but I cant start it, it is saying that error 5 permission denied.

When I had formatted the drive and the downgraded the OS back to Home Edition and the option came up I thought that I had some misconfiguration issues, however I found out that I only have this problem whenever I try to upgrade to XP pro.

Can you guys point me in the right direction as to what I am supposed to be looking for to fix this.

Am try this i have just breezed through your post but what i think is happening to you is that the server option is not enabled and hence RAS(Remote access server) is not starting. Am go to network connections and look @ the top you will see on the bar File, Edit,.... Advanced look in there under optional i think you might want to select a few of those things.
