    Default Your resume?

Hey all, I was just wondering how todays job seekers are making there resumes and cover letters?

I've seen a few in at my previous place of employment in JA, and its kinda sad to see the quality of the resumes that we got. Some people think that if they put it on a pretty paper it will make them stand out amount the others...well it would but not in a good way. What employers look for is the contents of the resume and if that is not structured correctly you can easily cause a potential job to slip by you.

when I was in high school they taught us to put your hobbies, religion, marital status, are people still doing this? What about Cover letters...are people just saying I would like to apply for the job you posted and thats it? does the cover letter and resume complement each other? or sync correctly?

Its been my experience that things like the above mention will at time get laughed at ...sorry but its true... lets here your thoughts.

I personally know that my cover letter and resume are next to perfect well in my view...every job i applied for I got a response. And I've helped quite a few persons with there resume, funny enough they had some of the above mentioned and when I asked why they have it, they just say thats how there use to doing it.

Some good posts already exist, I search and post the links.

    check this site: http://career-advice.monster.com/resume-tips/home.aspx

hobbies, religion, marital status, age, gender and other 'discriminating' data must be eliminated.
You are applying for a job, not looking a mate/date.

Your cover letter and resume should be written specific to the job requirements. (Request for Proposal).

It happens all the while even here at UWI. Lots of job hunters simply slap some words on paper and are perplexed when they do not receive a response.

I think most of us have been brainwashed into thinking that a resume must include all the things that you mentioned Kilaj1.

yeah but that post almost 3 years old talking about nowa days...even stuff like the primary school you go to is not needed on resumes.

I wonder if most people just go on the net for templates or use MS word templates?

I am usually having problems writing my resume and cover letter...even if I want to change the career objective depending on the job I am looking for or the first paragraph or second.

How about you guys teaching us how to write proper resume....I don't have a problem with spelling or should I say English rather.

To give more details what I mean is, I have done subjects per year at different institution, and I wish to change up the resume so that everything falls in one. Trying to do this leave me clueless. For example, I would have Institution A - Passes in Math and I.T in 2003, then Institution B - Pass in Accounts in 2004, then Institution C - Pass in Englsh in 2007. How can I get this sorted out? I think basically everything else is ok, in terms of Work Experience, Hobbies, etc.

I want to learn the trick to writing proper resume and cover letter. Would love to send out some resume this year.

why do you need to put religion on a resume thats none of their business.

Thats correct, I recall that when i went in for the interview they had me do a test and on it they asked for that info, I left it blank.

The Type of resume I make for people or correct or people is more of a "skills
    resume"

    Usually structured as follows:

    Name, Address, Phone number

Skills Profile (list all the applications and hardware you are familiar with, don't put proficient)

Work experience (very important how you structure this part, most people just put a list of companies they worked for, thats a no no...list the projects you worked on and your achievements, or state a problem that you found a solution to.
    Problem:
    Solution:
    Project:
    Achievement:
    Project:
    Achievement:

Education: (last school first, if you studied on your own, put that first and enter the full to be completed if needed)

    Reference: Available upon request
And thats it! don't need anything more...

Cover letters can be very tricky to write. What I've seen is alot of cover letters that are specific to a certain job. My cover letter is structured in a way that it can be used for multiple Tech fields, and i don't even have to change the position I'm applying for. A cover letter MUST complement your resume, its basically 2 paragraphs of what you bring to the table so to speak. state how your skills will benefit the company, be specific, touch on your education background....I post a proper structure in a sec

Talk about bad resumes i've seen resumes written on book paper and even in pen !! How about the format i keep telling people that fully blocked is the new method but some people stick to the old school style :
    Home address on the right,
    Company address left
then the greetings and the works and then
    the closing bottom right in
    line with the home address.
Does it still work that way?
    Shhhh!I see dead people!
