okay heres the workaround for them duties
    1. If your shipping it, take it out of original packing (as everyone says)
    2. Mark it as a gift or referbished
    3. if your carrying it do #1 and tell them its for personal use or you had it from JA (took it up for repairs.

but in anycase the duties where lifted years ago on computer stuff, that charge might be for other stuff by currior, I got a 1200USD laptop from the states and it was marked as used and valued at $300, paid like 1400JA

So if they lifted duties, why does he need to get rid of the box/wrappings?

That's a good question. I still haven't decided which route to go as it seems like a 50/50 chance of them charging.

i believe that even though there is no duty on computers, there is still GCT and customs fees- so if something is "new" it may attract those

Stamp duty and Customs User Fees. You don't pay duty on the value of laptops.

Its only a 50/50 chance if you do not unpack it from the original box etc. If you do, and have the proper explanation your good to go.

Bring it in without wrappings they can't be sure if you didn't buy it here and carried it up. Less hassle. I dunno. They're iffy! I brought my monitor out as a hand luggage in the box and everything with my laptop. Had to convince the guy that it wasn't a TV and my laptop was used.

PC parts don't attract GCT so there should be no charge but the rules aren't written in stone and it's just less of a bother if you just remove all the wrappings.

Unless things have changed since 2005 when i got my desktop he doesnt need to take it out of the box. I brouht in my desktop in the original boxes plastic on jus the way i got it fr the store, NO hassle. told them for personal use n went my merry way. Even brought in a 20inch Flat panel earlier this year without paying.!!!!!!!

That's how it works - personal use and you shouldn't get charged.
Even if they charge you - you should only be paying 2% Cess.

Whenever i travel i buy a laptop for somebody in my family - always the same thing. Still in box - personal use.

Just don't be carrying 3 or more and let them get suspicious
The trouble with learning from experience
is that the test comes first and
    the lesson afterwards
