    Default Freelance I.T Service Charges

    What is the range, for the fees that I.T personnel will charge for providing their expertise and time for services such as:

    Miscellaneous
    • Problem Diagnosis

    PC Maintenance
    • PC Building
    • hardware upgrade and repair
    • software upgrades and installations

    Networking
    • router and modem configurations
    • setting up small wired networks
    • setting up small wireless networks
    • combinations of wired and wireless
    • setting up enterprise scaled networks

    Web Authoring
    • Small miscellaneous websites
    • E-commerce or large websites

    Programming
    • Simple applications such as Point of Sale Inventory applications
    • Complexed or enterprise scaled applications for specialized use

    Here are just a few of the most common services that freelance I.T personnel will offer. We all have our customized billing systems with bells and whistles(transportation fee, sourcing fee, etc...), its a free market. Lets give the upcoming techies an idea of the acceptable range of fees that may be charged for general services. People may freelance for various reasons, it may be for extra funds or primary income.

    If you all want to add some other services and the fees involved, please go ahead. Collusion can be a good thing.

    Ill take a wak at it....
    Its kinda hard for me to give really good figures as I've bin out of the country for a while now and I cant tell how the IT market is fairing. but alot of these things depend on a few (or maybe just one) key points...Time

    All of these things would go up in cost when you factor in the time it takes to complete. So Ill start there....just note i may revise alot after i post

    1. Problem Diagnosis
    For an experienced Techie this is where you can justifiy your cost. Good detailed Diagnostics can show your client that you know your stuff and can do the job. Diagnosis PC:
    1-2 PCs (consumer) : $300 flat
    1-10 PCs (office) : $400-500 per hour

    Now I can go on and on about this but I think the point Im trying to make is that having flat rates on IT services is not benificial to you. The problem is that most of the time if you do under price your services it can scare away clients, if you over price your client they get scared away. For some its good to give them a free initial consult just so you can really asses what you have to do.

    For example, you can get a call and someone ask you to setup a small network of 10 PCs, rather than just jump and quote your price, visit the site and evaluate what needs to be done, get a check list, then get your price.

    Pricing IT service is difficult for freelance proffesionals, this is mainly because they dont really want to loose there clients due to over or under pricing. However I belive once you show your compitency and knowledge, it shouldnt be a problem to get the rate you want.

    That's impressive for prices. At my last place of employment they were looking at prices similar to the following:

    Miscellaneous

    * Problem Diagnosis - minimum charge of $1,000

    PC Maintenance

    * PC Building - add on of 10% to the overall cost of components
    * hardware upgrade and repair - $2,000/hr
    * software upgrades and installations - $2,000/hr

    Networking - $2000/hr

    * router and modem configurations
    * setting up small wired networks
    * setting up small wireless networks
    * combinations of wired and wireless
    * setting up enterprise scaled networks

    Web Authoring

    * Small miscellaneous websites $1800/page
    * E-commerce or large websites $4000/day

    Programming

    * Simple applications such as Point of Sale Inventory applications $2000/hr
    * Complexed or enterprise scaled applications for specialized use $2000/hr

    I was trying to find this information from last week. These rates are not bad for real.
    unzip; strip; touch; finger; mount; fsck; more; yes; unmount; sleep" - my daily unix command list?
