Right Path/Wrong Path ?Linux From Scratch
What is Linux From Scratch?
Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with step-by-step instructions for building your own customized Linux system entirely from source.
Why would I want an LFS system?
Many wonder why they should go through the hassle of building a Linux system from scratch when they could just download an existing Linux distribution. However, there are several benefits of building LFS. Consider the following:
LFS teaches people how a Linux system works internally
Building LFS teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own tastes and needs.
Any Ideas ?
Have used Sco Unix, a bit of Redhat, and a bit of Knoppix, I can find my way around, since on a OS level, it works like windows ie. kernel/drivers/hardware/apps. But the way it works internally and memorising stuff like what the diff dirs like /var, /etc do and the heavy duty networking and the juicy comand line stuff is my achilles heel.

I am new to Ubuntu and I have been using a great tutorial site to get ahead. Thought i might just drop the link here.

Hmm.. You have me scared now...
Any other ideas to get on the linux path ?
I was using Dos from 5.0, and learning things like editing .ini files to fix printing/networking/memory problems made it easier to fix "push button" M$ Releases later on.
I want to start learning Linux like that.

I had similar sentiments about Linux some time ago, wanted to be as comfortable at the Unix command line as I am with the DOS command line etc. Got some great links etc but was basically too lazy to follow through. I'm gonna try again but this time follow the LPIC 1 & 2 curriculum and hopefully pick up those certs along the way![]()
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
My word...Gentoo sounds delightfully hellish...
Hwever, would Portage and the Init system may make it harder to jump on to reg Redhat or Ubunto builds to do work. ?

Actually no. You generally have the use the package manager that the distribution comes with the distribution. eg. You would use RPM (Red Hat Package Manager) -> Red Hat, Portage -> Gentoo, APT -> Debian/Ubuntu etc.
Red Hat has seen the usefullness of a package manager like APT so they have included Yum as the default as opposed to up2date in all of their newest releases.
As this is Linux, using package managers are not necessarily important as all programs can be compiled from the source files.
