When i decided to set up my dual boot system (Win 2000 and Win Me) i was advised to install Windows 9x first because if you install Win xp first it will overwrite the boot.ini file and as such you will not be able to dual-boot.

If you need more guidance try reading this article :
http://duxcw.com/digest/Howto/softwa...ual/index.htmlnote however it's for Win 2k instead of Win Xp but the steps are very much similar.
Another thing after you have the dual boot system up and running by default on boot up the system will wait 30 sec for you to select which OS to load, also by default Windows XP is the first option on the boot menu and as such will load after the 30sec has expired. To change the 30 sec time/ to have have Win 9x as the first option on the menu do the following:

    1. In XP
contol panel >system>properties>Advance>startup and recovery> Settings.
Under system start up change to what you want.

and oh yes use partition magic to partition your hard drive - make life much easier Now who to get Linux Mandrake/redhat into the mix? hmm
