I didnt know you can configure pix with vpn. I know you can allow vpn traffic through. I thought you needed a concentrator for that. at work we have a concentrator 3000 and pix 525 .

    Pix does do VPN.

To get alerts, you could setup your pix to log to a syslog server, then use a tool like OSSEC HIDS to monitor the pix syslog messages and setup alerts on messages indicating a sucessful login to VPN.

IF the pix alone can do vpn why the need for a concentrator?

    Capacity and performance.

Also, some people prefer to have VPN devices positioned either in front of, behind, or beside their firewalls rather than actually on their firewalls.
